Common Sense Self-Checkout Regulations Head to Governor Mckee’s Desk.
June 10th we sat in the East Gallery of the statehouse and watched as the RI House of Representatives voted on House Bill 7290 and Senate Bill 2342, the Common Sense Self-Checkout Regulations Bill. The final bill will ensure that in grocery stores there is a person operating a register for every three self check-out stations in operation. It also ensures the workers who oversee self-checkouts won’t be given other tasks while assigned to a self-checkout coral and that there is always an Americans with Disabilities Act compliant register available. The full text of the bill can be read HERE.

The Final vote was 58-10 in favor of the bill’s passage but the journey doesn’t end here. Next the RI Senate is scheduled to vote on House Bill 7290 today (6/11). The house bill is an exact copy of Senate Bill 2342 which has already passed the Senate (as well as the House.) In RI both chambers vote on their own versions of a bill, then vote on the other chamber’s version. When both bills are exact copies of each other and pass both chambers it is sent to the governor who will either ratify or veto. We encourage everyone to contact Governor Mckee with a message of support for ratification of Common Sense Self-Checkout Regulations.
