- Why does the Union need a political and legislative arm?
Such an organization - The Active Ballot Club - protects and promotes your interests by supporting legislation beneficial to UFCW members and all Americans and by opposing legislation harmful to Union members and their families.
- What else does the Active Ballot Club do?
In addition to its legislative functions, the Active Ballot Club (ABC) endeavors to have each UFCW member and his/her family registered and voting on Election Day.
- How does the ABC inform members on issues and voting records in congress?
The ABC keeps its members informed through the UFCW Action magazine and legislative bulletins.
- Can UFCW unions have their own ABC committees?
Yes. Each UFCW Union can appoint or elect a political ABC Committee to keep its members informed about legislation.
- Can ABC contributions be more than $2.00?
Yes. Some members give as much as $240.00 each year. They are then enrolled in a special ABC Leadership 21 Club.
- Can people other than UFCW members contribute to the ABC?
Yes. In fact many families and friends of our members, including UFCW lawyers, accountants and others, make contributions to the ABC.
- Does the ABC tell members who they should vote for?
No. The ABC makes recommendations, but the voter makes his or her own choice.
- Are all union-endorsed candidates democrats?
No. The ABC is non-partisan. As such, it endorses candidates regardless of the party affiliation, as long as the candidates are committed to the programs of working men and women in America.
- Is there a difference between ABC and COPE?
Yes. The ABC is the political and legislative arm of the UFCW International Union. COPE is the AFL-CIO counterpart. They are separate and distinct organizations.
