Annual Scholarship Program

 

The Greater Southeastern Mass Labor Council Scholarship is available to high school seniors living in Southeastern Massachusetts, Cape Cod and the Islands whose parents or Legal Guardian are members of a union affiliated with the Greater Southeastern Mass Labor Council.  Three $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to three students selected as winners during the competition.  In order to distribute the scholarship awards evenly, one winner will be selected from each of the following three regions: the Cape & Islands area, the Greater Fall River area and the Greater New Bedford area.

 

The Objectives of The Greater Southeastern Mass Labor Council are:

·        To fulfill the hopes and aspirations of the working people of America through the democratic process within the framework of our constitutional government.

·        To responsibly serve the interests of all the American people at the collective bargaining table, in the community and in the rights and responsibilities of citizenship.

·        To pledge ourselves to the more effective organization of working men and women; to the achievement of even higher standards of living and working conditions; to the attainment of security for all the people; to the enjoyment of the leisure which their skills make possible and to strengthen our way of life and the fundamental freedoms which are the basis of our democratic society.

 

ALL STUDENTS MUST

·        Have parents or Legal Guardian that are members of a union affiliated with the Greater Southeastern Mass Labor Council.  NOTE:  Please contact The Greater Southeastern Mass Labor Council at 508-992-5475 or at gsmlaborcouncil.org/scholarships if you have any questions or want to verify your union’s membership in The Greater Southeastern Mass Labor Council

·        Be a senior in high school and plan to attend college in the fall

·        Submit a completed application, high school transcript and scholarship essay by March 1, 2009.  Any application received after the March 1st deadline will be automatically rejected.

SCHOLARSHIP ESSAY

1.     Write a 600-word essay describing the history of your family’s involvement in unions.  Please also refer to the following areas:  How and Why your family became involved in organized labor; describe any special moments your family benefited from their involvement in a union; describe what you believe to be the value of belonging to a union; explain your understanding of the union movement in America today.

2.     Essay must be typed using 12 pt. font.  Margins should be no more than 1 inch on all sides.  All lines must be double-spaced.

3.     Please return the completed essay and completed application form by March 1, 2009
