Sample Letter of Opposition to H. 197
April 17, 2008
Dear Representative XXX: I am writing in strong opposition to H. 179, legislation that would eliminate item pricing in food stores in Massachusetts. As a member of the United Food and Commercial Workers and a worker at XXX, I am concerned about the effect this legislation will have on my job and the financial stability of my family. Simply put, if this legislation is enacted, it would greatly reduce the need for work hours at my store. It has been analyzed that this could mean a reduction of a least 5 jobs per store in Massachusetts. This legislation could not only have an adverse effect on full time workers, but will significantly reduce the amount of weekly hours for part time employees at a time when the economy is in a recession. With more than 30,000 fellow union brothers and sisters in the commercial food business, this could have a detrimental impact on the state and with consumers. As a constituent of yours, I am hopeful that you will take my concerns in mind when you are voting on H. 179. Sincerely, NAME
